Flat Roofing

Flat roofing is both economic and efficient with many advantages over a pitched roof. A flat roof is typically the choice for smaller structures, such as garages, extensions, porches, outbuildings, dormas, and balconies. This is considered to be the more affordable option as less materials and less labour is needed meaning many projects can be completed in just a single day. Although known as a flat roof, in fact all flat roofs do have a slight pitch of up to 10 degress in order to allow the rainwater to drain away properly.

By far the biggest advantage to using a flat roof apart from the cost is the use you can now make from this space. With options to use as a balcony or roof top garden, a flat roof can be the ideal choice of roof with the options nearly endless. Flat roofs also tend to be more accessible than a pitched roof so cleaning your windows and guttering, or installing satelitte dishes or solar panels become easier and less expensive to do.

The two most common forms of flat roofing are mastic asphalt and high performance felt roofing.

Mastic Asphalt

Mastic asphalt is an ideal material for a whole range of construction applications, both new build and refurbishment, where a smooth, seamless, durable surface is required. It is without question the most toughest waterproof membrane available to architects and home owners on the market. The mastic asphalt craft is only taught by professional tutors and the traditional time served apprenticeship is 4 years which we achieved in 1981 at Hackney College.

Mastic asphalt is one of the world’s most traditional construction materials and has continued to develop with the times, even in today’s hi-tech building industry. It has been successfully used on green roof projects for over 80 years. In 2008 UK Mastic asphalt became the first industry in the world to achieve the CarbonZero standard. It offers total waterproofing integrity for roofing and tanking.

In recent years the material has been reformulated to include advanced polymers for increased durability, combining its traditional strengths with modern technology. Not simply a roofing material, it is used in various applications, including walkways and steps. Mastic asphalt is delivered to site as solidfied blocks and is re-melted before applying to the deck in two coats on top of a layer of loose laid sheathing felt which protects the mastic asphalt covering from damage caused by thermal movement of the deck.

High Performance Felt Roofing

The main advantage of high performance felt roofing is its life span with many projects lasting way over its life expectancy. The high performance felt roof consists of three layers of sheet felt materials that form a dense, voidless and impermeable barrier. The high performance felt roof system is built up of multiple layers of torch-on bitumen felts that are pre coated with bitumen. The 3 layer system usually consists of a perforated underlay, a 2mm underlay layer, then a 4-5mm mineral finish.

Fascia & Soffit

Fascias and soffits play an important role in keeping your home dry and pest free, aswell as making your property look far more attractive. A fascia is traditionally a softwood board that is mounted to the exposed edges of your rafters, however this has been replaced with high grade UPVC which is hardwearing, maintenance free, and copes well to exposure to moisture.

The purpose of a fascia board is to protect and seal the roof and the interior of your property from exposure to the elements, aswell as to support roof tiles at eaves level and to provide support and a fixing point for the guttering.

A soffit is a covering which sits between the outer edges of your roof and the wall of the property. You will be able to see if you have a soffit by standing underneath the overhang of your roof and looking up, as not all roofs have a soffit. Soffits are usually made of UPVC as timber soffits are more likely to decay quickly. At Direct Roofing we install and maintain all types of fascias and soffits in a variety of different profiles and colours.

Guttering

Guttering is an essential system for your property’s well being and protection. Guttering is the system of open pipes attached to the fascia board which collects rainwater from the roof and discharges it into the downpipes. Without effective guttering, rainwater could work its way into the foundations of your house and create major problems.

Guttering comes in a variety of shapes, colours, and sizes. UPVC guttering is extremely popular. Other than its durability, another advantage of using UPVC guttering is its style as UPVC guttering is very attractive, and comes in styles ranging from half-round and square-line to ogee guttering.

At Direct Roofing all gutters are levelled and aligned to ensure that they have the correct fall, leading to the rainwater running in the correct direction and down the downpipe. The importance of your guttering should never be under estimated. At Direct Roofing we offer cost effective solutions to keep your gutters functioning correctly and leak free. Weather you need a replacement joint or bracket, or simply just want your guttering cleaned or unblocked, Direct Roofing offer you complete guttering services at competitive prices.
